    This is a new site that uses the Heritage Foundation mapping system to display
    pictures, stories, videos, documents and all sorts of interesting exhibits about
    Oxford and Lafayette County.

Lost Friends Index
    This searchable database provides access to more than 2,500 advertisements
    that appeared in the Southwestern Christian Advocate between November 1879
    and December 1900 and features messages from individuals searching for
    loved ones lost in slavery.

 

Ships' Passenger Lists
    Here's a link provided by one of our younger followers who found it useful
    and suggested we add it to our listing.

 

Georgetown Project
    In 1838, Georgetown University sold 272 slaves to plantations in Louisiana.
    Men, women, and children. University folklore says they perished without a trace.
    But almost one hundred survived the Civil War. Thousands of descendants
    are alive today.

 

Information Wanted
    Last Seen: Finding Family After Slavery aims to identify, digitize, transcribe, and
    publish ads placed in newspapers across the United States (and beyond) by
    formerly enslaved people searching for family members and loved ones
    after emancipation.

 

Genealogy for Kids

    on a genealogy merit badge. Simple steps make it easy for everyone to
    participate regardless of age.

    The Heritage Foundation has several great projects in the county in which
    they have restored old structures as museums.

 

Slave Voyages
    The SlaveVoyages website is a collaborative digital initiative that compiles
    and makes publicly accessible records of the largest slave trades in history.
    Search these records to learn about the broad origins and forced relocations of
    more than 12 million African people who were sent across the Atlantic in slave
    ships, and hundreds of thousands more who were trafficked within the Americas.
